This exploratory data visualization project is part of my dissertation research on archives that collect materials documenting the U.S. carceral system. The data visualizations explore the ecosystem of these archives using mapping, network analysis, and text analysis. The goal of is to surface shared and divergent approaches among archives doing similar work. “Archives of Incarceration” is a work in progress and informs my ongoing dissertation research. Once completed, the website and data visualizations will serve as a resource for memory workers who are engaged in documenting lived experiences of incarceration.

Open / Opaque

Visualization of reported police use of force cases in Cincinnati
https://arobinsonsweet.github.io/openopaque/
Completed as my final project for DH 201: Introduction to Digital Humanities, “Open/Opaque” visualizes data on police use of force. Compiling data from four different police departments that was made available through the federal government’s Police Data Initiative, this critical digital humanities project interrogates the supposed transparency offered by open data initiatives. Visualizations created from the four datasets reveals inconsistencies and obfuscations in the way police departments create and share data about use of force.

With the BioCritical Studies Lab
Part of Coroners Reports Project: Death Under the U.S. Medical Examiner/Coroner System
As part of a team of researchers at UCLA’s BioCritical Studies Lab, I helped analyze a dataset of deaths in Maryland local jails. Using Tableau, I created numerous visualizations that helped the research team understand the data and subsequently draft relevant policy recommendations. Many of the visualizations I created were included in a published report on in-custody deaths in Maryland jails co-authored with advocates from local organizations.
